Standards

UnicodeMonotype Imaging is a member of the Unicode® Consortium, a nonprofit organization founded to develop, extend and promote the use of the Unicode Standard and related software globalization standards.

The Unicode Standard is a character coding system designed to support the worldwide interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages and technical disciplines of the modern world.

Monotype Imaging developed the Arial® Unicode MS font in conjunction with Microsoft, and today all fonts developed by Monotype Imaging conform to the Unicode Standard.

W3CThe World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community that develops open standards to ensure the long-term growth of the Web. The W3C’s mission is to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web.

Monotype Imaging is a contributing member of the W3C involved with Web fonts and CSS working groups to develop and promote advanced typography on the Web, and make Web fonts widely deployed and available to Web authors. Among contributions is our patented MicroType® Express (MTX) font compression algorithm, which reduces Web font file sizes, available at no charge, subject to the terms of our license.

MPEG-4The Moving Picture Experts Group is a committee of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization), the worldwide network of national standards institutes.

MPEG develops international standards for compression, decompression, processing, and coded representation of moving pictures, audio, and their combination to satisfy a wide variety of applications.

Monotype Imaging’s MicroType® Express font compression technology, along with the Unicode-compliant OpenType® font format co-developed by Microsoft and Adobe, has been included in the MPEG-4 specification, the standard for coding multimedia video, audio, and interactive computer-animated graphics applications. The technologies are specified in the ISO/IEC document 14496-18, “Font Compression and Streaming.”

KhronosThe Khronos Group is a member-funded industry consortium focused on the creation of open standard APIs to enable the authoring and playback of dynamic media on a wide variety of platforms and devices. Members are able to contribute to the development of Khronos API standards and are empowered to vote at various stages before public deployment of specifications. Members are also able to accelerate the delivery of cutting-edge 3D platforms and applications through early access to specification drafts and conformance tests.

Monotype Imaging’s involvement with Khronos extends to helping define and shape standards for fonts, multilingual text and text composition.

EcmaFor more than 40 years, Ecma has contributed to worldwide standardization in information technology and telecommunications. More than 370 Ecma standards and 90 technical reports have been published, with more than two-thirds of them adopted as international standards and/or technical reports.

Monotype Imaging is an associate member of the Ecma-Technical Community 46, known as Ecma-TC 46. The goal of the committee is to produce a formal standard for an XML-based electronic paper format and XML-based page description language which is consistent with existing implementations of the XML Paper Specification (XPS). The committee will use the XPS specification as a starting point with the aim to provide a standard, secure and trustworthy format that enables a wide set of applications, devices, tools and platforms to implement compatible paginated-document workflows. Monotype Imaging has joined Ecma to contribute to the evolution of the XPS specification.

JCPSince its introduction in 1998 as the open, participative process to develop and revise the Java® technology specifications, reference implementations, and test suites, the Java Community Process (JCP) program has fostered the evolution of the Java platform in cooperation with the international Java developer community.

Monotype Imaging joined JCP to support development efforts that enhance rendering of advanced 2D vector graphics and text, which, in turn, allow implementing improved user interfaces and support scalable rich media content. Currently, we are a member of two JCP Expert Groups – JSR-271 "Mobile Information Device Profile 3.0" that defines new features for Java ME platform for mobile devices, and JSR-287 "Scalable 2D Vector Graphics API 2.0 for Java ME" that defines an optional package for rendering enhanced 2D vector graphics.
